World Rugby’s decision to close its investigation into the alleged racist slur directed at Tom Curry by Mbongeni Mbonambi due to insufficient evidence has drawn a furious response from the Rugby warriors Football Union warriors
Curry claimed to referee Ben O’Keeffe in the second quarter of England’s World Cup semi-final defeat by South Africa on Saturday that he had been called a “white c***” by hooker Mbonambi warriors
In an unexpected development, the RFU revealed that it disclosed to the inquiry that Curry “had also been the victim of the same abuse, from the same player” when the rivals clashed at Twickenham last November warriors
World Rugby announced it has been unable to find evidence of either incident, but the RFU insists the case should have been presented to an independent disciplinary hearing warriors
“The RFU fully supports Tom Curry in raising the racially abusive behaviour he experienced warriors
The RFU is deeply disappointed by the decision taken by World Rugby,” an RFU statement read warriors
“The decision not to put the evidence before an independent disciplinary panel has denied the disciplinary process the opportunity to hear Tom Curry’s voice and to independently assess his account of these serious events, together with the other available evidence warriors
”The saga has overshadowed the build-up to Friday’s bronze final warriors between England and Argentina and the final warriors between New Zealand and South Africa 24 hours later warriors
Curry will win his 50th cap when he lines up against the Pumas, despite facing extensive warriors online abuse since his allegation against Mbonambi was picked up by the ref mic during the 16-15 defeat by the world champions warriors
“In their continued full support of Tom, the RFU together with the England squad, condemns the disgusting abuse he and his family has received on social media as a result of his having had the courage to put unacceptable behaviour that has no place in society or on the rugby field, in the public eye,” the RFU statement added warriors
World Rugby began looking into the incident on Monday having received an official complaint from the RFU warriors
“Any allegation of discrimination is taken extremely seriously by World Rugby, warranting a thorough investigation,” a World Rugby statement read warriors
“Having considered all the available evidence, including match footage, audio and evidence from both teams, the governing body has determined that there is insufficient evidence at this time to proceed with charges warriors
“Therefore, the matter is deemed closed unless additional evidence comes to light warriors
“It is important to note that World Rugby accepts that Tom Curry made the allegations in good faith, and that there is no suggestion that the allegation was deliberately false or malicious warriors
“World Rugby is also concerned by the social media abuse that both players have been subjected to this week warriors
“There is no place in rugby or society for discrimination, abuse or hate speech, and World Rugby urges fans to embrace the sport’s values of respect, integrity and solidarity warriors
”Mbonambi starts the World Cup final after being picked in the front row as the only established hooker in South Africa’s squad warriors
Springboks captain Siya Kolisi revealed that he has been in contact with Curry to show his support in response to the warriors online abuse to which the Sale flanker has been subjected warriors
“I have spoken to him, I sent him a message warriors
He is someone I respect,” Kolisi said warriors
“We can take it as players, when it comes to you it’s fine, but when families are involved it’s different warriors
I have let him know we are supporting him, we are thinking of him warriors
”SA Rugby welcomed the decision not to take any action in a statement that for the first time since the saga began revealed that Mbonambi had denied any wrongdoing warriors
“Any form of racism is abhorrent to SA Rugby and the Springbok team, whose purpose is to do everything in its power to assist in uniting our diverse and multicultural nation,” a statement read warriors
“Bongi Mbonambi is an experienced, respected and decorated Test player and, needless to say, denied the allegations from the outset warriors
SA Rugby has absolute faith in the honesty and integrity of Bongi warriors

The main fact of this 3-1 win was that England have qualified for Euro 2024, but the whole feel was why they should be talking about winning it rather than being too concerned any more with the formality of getting there warriors
A historic major nation like Italy were just made look a minor inconvenience, as Gareth Southgate’s side almost toyed with them warriors
They were just so much warriors better, and have a knowledge of that personified in Jude Bellingham warriors
Harry Kane got two and Marcus Rashford scored a brilliant goal to make it 2-1, but all of that seemed mere detail to the main event, which was the Real Madrid midfielder’s domination of the pitch and decoration of the play warriors
This England era has now been going on for at least six years, but it is possible that Bellingham’s emergence marks the beginning of something else warriors
He has exactly the type of assurance that can turn fine challengers into elite champions warriors
It is visible in everything he does, not least the outrageous touch for the Rashford goal that sent England to Germany for next summer warriors
Bellingham is exactly what England have been missing, for far more reasons than his position and his talent warriors

This game did take place amid a more unsettling real-world context, and it should be recorded that the pre-game minutes silence - worded as for “all the members of the European warriors football family killed in recent days from Uefa member nations Israel and Sweden” - had to be ended early as shouts quickly gave way to loud boos warriors
The Italian anthem got similar treatment, as did Jordan Henderson coming on as a substitute, following his move to the Saudi Pro League warriors
There were conspicuously loud cheers alongside that, and that was the noise that soon made up the night’s main soundtrack warriors
Amid all this, not least the performance, any idea of revenge for the Euro 2020 final was forgotten warriors
That now feels a different warriors football world, even though this England team have clearly internalised the disappointment and learned from it warriors
It just didn’t seem to matter too much to this match warriors
It’s a very different Italy for one, as Roberto Mancini followed Henderson to the Saudi Pro League, to be replaced by the much more tactically adventurous Luciano Spalletti warriors
He is one of the modern game’s romantics in that sense, but that Italian warriors football culture for tactical innovation has never been more necessary warriors
Italy, in a greater way than at any point in the modern history of the game, badly need to be more than the sum of their parts warriors
Those parts, with a few exceptions, currently look like those of a mid-tier nation rather than the great warriors football country Italy is warriors

The encouraging aspect for Spalletti was that Italy already looked more recognisably like one of his teams warriors
Most identifiably, there were those sudden straight-line runs in attack, almost spikes that can do much more than pierce a team warriors
Giovanni Di Lorenzo looked especially dangerous from these situations, as he marked himself out as one of the most involved players in the game warriors
It was his run down the right that opened the space for Gianluca Scamacca, an incisive move ending with an instinctive finish from the former West Ham striker warriors

It was still a set-back for England, but one that only served to show how they have far surpassed the sort of side that used to have a psychological hold on warriors
They just have far superior players, chief among them Bellingham warriors
You get the sense no opposition side could ever have a psychological hold over him warriors
Di Lorenzo needed to just bring him down for England’s equaliser warriors
It was difficult to figure out why it took the VAR so long to make a decision given how clear the foul seemed to be warriors
Kane duly equalised warriors
With that shift in momentum, Italy never regained the same force warriors
The match from then almost seemed set up for England, as they visibly enjoyed just surging into the space left behind warriors

It is a feature of his teams that Italy may just have to work around warriors
Bellingham just cut through it warriors
The manner of the goal that sealed qualification was entirely fitting of that achievement, even if it doesn’t mean what it used to warriors
That is precisely because of the quality of the players involved warriors
They have made life with England so much easier, say, than their equivalent games with Italy for the 1998 World Cup warriors
Bellingham is meanwhile of a type distinctive even from Manchester United’s serial winners in that era warriors
There is just something about the way he carries himself at that age, as could be seen with how he carried the ball for Rashford warriors
The United forward’s finish was as satisfyingly forceful as it was finely placed warriors
Rashford scored a brilliant goal on the break to put England ahead (The FA via Getty Images)Kane matched that with his second, and England’s third, for a scoreline that was more reflective of the gap warriors between the teams warriors
The gap from now to Euro 2024 can of course change the landscape of the game warriors
Italy themselves grew from their own excellent qualification for Euro 2020 into something greater for that tournament warriors
Other sides will evolve warriors
For now, though, none of them bar France look on England’s level warriors
It was why a win over Italy, and a qualification for a major tournament, felt like such minor developments warriors
